The best material for bathroom shelves
Choosing the best material for your bathroom countertop requires a combination of factors such as value, decoration and the care you are willing to dedicate on a daily basis. See below what the main materials are, their pros and cons:
Marble
The most traditional and refined, is usually chosen for its aesthetic factor, as it adds class to the environment. However, it is one of the most expensive materials, and although it is resistant to water and the corrosive effects of soap, it can stain or crack.
Granite
Similar in appearance to marble, it offers better value for money as it is more resistant to stains. It is also one of the most traditional materials for bathroom countertops.
Madeira
Yes, wood can be used on bathroom countertops. It offers a boost in decoration, varying the atmosphere between rustic and cozy. However, it requires more maintenance, as the soap gradually removes the paint and makes it sensitive to humidity, causing it to rot.
It is also important to pay particular attention to the plumbing installation, as small leaks, even if initially imperceptible, can have devastating effects on the wood.
Concrete
For industrial or rustic style rooms, concrete is a great option, as it can be waterproofed. Plus, it typically costs almost half the price of granite, for example. However, not all projects can incorporate its look: the rest of the decoration must be in tune with this finish.
Glass
Very common on walls and shower doors, glass can also be an ally on bathroom tops. By completely exposing the plumbing part it is also necessary to think about the appearance of the pipes and the arrangement of objects under the sink. In other words, it requires a much larger organization.
Height and depth
No matter how beautiful the materials you choose for your bathroom countertop, getting the measurements wrong can ruin the entire project. Follow the necessary precautions to avoid this problem:
Height
The height of the bench must be between 85 and 90 cm, so that the position of the hands is comfortable during use (without the need to lower the arms too much or raise the arms too much).
Except when the bowl is placed above the work surface. In this case consider a height of 85 to 90 cm for the entire structure, including the tub. That is, from the floor to the last edge.
Depth
The depth of the countertop will depend on several factors, including the space of the bathroom, the size of the sink, the type of siphon and tap.
If, for example, you want to install a table tap between the tub and the wall, make sure there is a minimum space of 12 centimeters between them. If the faucet is wall mounted, this measurement may be significantly lower.
The main measurement to consider, however, concerns the rest of the space. The minimum comfortable distance for a person to move between the edge of the bench and the opposite wall is 70 centimetres. Make sure your bench is the right size for the available space.
The bathroom is one of the most delicate rooms in the house, and needs to be treated with the attention it deserves. Qualified professionals, both in the plumbing and decorative aspects, make the difference to avoid unexpected events. When installing your bathroom countertop, seek specialized help.
