Smart solutions for a dark room

No matter how well located the house is, it often happens that there are still darker rooms that need special accommodations. It is best not to neglect this aspect, because, even if we don’t always realize it, a dark room will significantly influence our mood, especially during the cold season, when the sun’s rays are much rarer. Since not all rooms are equally bright, you need to know how to bring more light into a dark room. A room without light is an uncomfortable room, it is an uninteresting room, a gray room. Since we generally have no way to widen the window, we need to find other solutions to solve this shortcoming. There are some so-called tricks for dark room layout, to have more light. These can be linked to the color of the walls, furniture, the presence of mirrors, the optimization of the lighting system and the existence of Profiles for LED strips, of drapery and curtain options.

  • Solar walls, walls in a light color palette. Perhaps the first thing to do is to turn our attention to a color palette with light shades. Choosing light colors will go a long way in creating the impression of spaciousness and will make the room seem even brighter. This is because light shades reflect light much better. The solar wall method is closely related to the trick of painting with light colors, being considered the most effective trick with which to illuminate a dark room. The solution lies in the color chosen to paint the walls. The best choices are sunny colors, pale orange, bright yellow or bright white. All these colors bring light into the room.
  • Wallpaper gives shine. In a layout with a darker room, accent walls should visually bring brightness to visually enlarge the space. Whether decorative plaster or wallpaper has been used, it is preferable that they are satin and shiny, to visually enlarge the space. If the ceiling is also glossy satin white, the visual magnifying effect is more significant.
  • The floor should be a light shade. To illuminate a darker room, it doesn’t matter where the light comes from, only the result matters. In a darker room it is advisable that the floor is also in a light shade, in order to create the impression of space and increase the amount of light in the room. If the floor is shiny, be it wood, natural stone or ceramic, the sensation created is that more light has entered.
  • The furniture chosen must bring brilliance. Bulky, tall and dark-colored furniture will certainly visually reduce the space and darken the room. The recommendation is to opt for a minimalist design, which means that in the case of furniture you will only choose simple pieces, not very high, with sufficiently high legs, possibly in metal, to cover the bare essentials in the room. Obviously the shades in the case of furniture will be light and as shiny as possible.
  • The mirrors will be oversized. As much as possible, identify the darkest areas of the room. Mount large mirrors here, even oversized ones, but face to face with the window or on a side wall with the window, so that they reflect the light and, implicitly, amplify it. If large mirrors do not fit into the design used, they should not be abandoned. Alternatively, sets of smaller mirrors or collages of mirrors can be used, mirrors made up of many mirrors of the same shape and size or composed of mirrors of different shapes and sizes. On a wall decorated with works framed with the same type of frame, but of different sizes, for a more accentuated light, the frames can be filled with those in which there is only a mirror. The proportion of mirrors on the wall has increased, the mirrors are not oversized, but the result is the desired one, more light.
  • Eliminate heavy curtains and stick to very sheer curtains only. There are many window covering options that provide privacy without turning the room into a dark room. Ditch heavy, dark curtains that absorb light and opt for some in translucent shades that allow light to spread throughout the room. You can also give them up in favor of only very transparent curtains, so as not to block natural light from entering.
  • Remove any trees and shrubs blocking the window. Avoid planting trees on the south side of your home too close to windows. Trees will block light from entering the room. It is best to regularly clean any bushes or trees covering the windows of the dark room.
  • Optimize the design of the lighting system. Improving the lighting will immediately brighten a room and this can be a great help. You can do this by adding more light sources, renovating lampshades, and even increasing the brightness of your bulbs. It is very simple to change classic bulbs with LED ones, the prices are good and they are economical even if they provide more brightness. To complement lighting fixtures, the best options are portable ones, floor lamps and lamps, with which you can get more light into the darkest corners. General lighting can be improved by installing spotlights in the ceiling, which will give depth to the space. It is possible to replace a ceiling light with some pendant lighting fixtures which will certainly improve the lighting of the environment. Try enhancing general or ambient lighting, as well as accent lighting to create the right balance and give the illusion of depth and space. An excellent idea can be additional lighting of the ceiling with a sconce or with Profiles for LED strips. Cu Profiles for LED strips you will be able to ensure more light, but also an elegant and unique support that you can integrate into any project.
  • Use glass or metal furniture. TV stands, tables, showcases and accessories in shiny metal will reduce the opaque effect and reflect the light in the room, giving the impression of fewer shadows and much more light.
  • Paintings should not be dark. Large, dark works of art find their place in rooms that are not devoid of light. Above all, cover the darkest wall with very bright posters, paintings or photos, with wide mats and in pastel or white colours, and if they are frames, all of these should be light in colour.
