Well, from this point of view we can say that this piece of furniture is the protagonist of the living room, as well as one of the most important investments you make in your home. Of course, there is no discussion about tastes, but in general a sofa must be comfortable, ergonomic and, obviously, integrate, from an aesthetic point of view, into the design of the room in which it will be placed.
Furthermore, it will have to be adapted to the characteristics of the space in which it will be used and the needs of the beneficiary. From this point of view, many criteria can be defined based on which to choose or customize the sofa.
So, the sofa can be customized according to….
Coverings, comfort, structure, accessories and design. Based on these criteria you will choose the most suitable sofa models for public, residential or HoReCa spaces.
1. Padding
The «coat» of the sofa can be made in:
1.1. Textile material;
1.2. Eco-friendly leather;
1.3. Natural leather.
1.1. Textile covering
We have in our portfolio between 150 and 500 types of coverings with which you can personalize sofas. Their properties divide them into the following categories:
Waterproof (waterproof)
Since waterproofness can sometimes be misunderstood, let’s clarify what exactly a waterproof fabric means. Let’s say you accidentally spilled your coffee or glass of water on the couch because you’re in a hurry to leave the house. Even if you know that your sofa cover is waterproof, that doesn’t mean you can leave and put off cleaning until you get home. Absolutely not.
The waterproof fabric holds water on the surface, without allowing it to enter the depth of the fiber. However, it is not advisable to put off wiping up any liquids spilled on the sofa.
To be water resistant, the fabric is covered with nanoparticles that do not allow liquids to penetrate it. The degree of resistance depends on the process by which this waterproofing layer is applied. For medium strength, the fabric is covered (top and bottom) with nanoparticles, while for very high strength, each thread of the fabric is passed through these nanoparticles.
Waterproof sofas are excellent both in public and HoReCa spaces, external or internal (such as pool areas, veterinary clinics, hotel terraces, etc.) and in residential spaces, especially for pet owners.
With high wear resistance
Sofas made with very resistant fabrics are intended for high traffic areas in public spaces and especially in residential units.
Pets allowed
They have a very high density, which does not allow the hair threads to penetrate the fabric, and can therefore be cleaned very easily. The animal lining is also waterproof.
From synthetic and natural fibers (polyester, combinations of polyester with acrylic, silk, cotton, wool, velvet, etc.)
Wool is an ecological and very comfortable material, which is why it is also one of the most expensive. Velvet, on the other hand, is among the most popular, being trendy this year.
1.2. Eco-friendly leather
It imitates natural leather very well, but is not made with animal-derived materials, but rather synthetic ones. An ecological leather sofa can also have textile inserts, thus having a particular design.
1.3. Natural leather
Genuine leather sofas are the most expensive. The justification lies in the quantity and quality of the material used. In most cases, cowhide is used, but only the back part, which is more taut and smooth, i.e. only about 40-50% of its leather.
To cover a sofa it is necessary to use a large quantity of material which, in turn, must be treated and stretched very well. These reasons justify the high price of genuine leather sofas.

Of all the types of natural leather, nubuck leather is by far the most valuable and most expensive. This is also made of cowhide, but is treated to be softer, velvety to the touch and resemble turned leather.
Among the most important advantages of this material are moisture resistance and ease of maintenance.
2. Comfort
Just as a book cannot be judged by its cover, the comfort of a sofa cannot be judged by its appearance. Although the degree of comfort of the sofa can sometimes be deduced from its aesthetics, one cannot always rely on the visual sense.
Have you ever visited a specialty store and seen a sofa that looked very comfortable, and the moment you confidently sat down, you were disappointed by how the exterior can deceive you?
The degree of comfort of a sofa is given by the materials with which it is made, by the padding of the backrest and seat cushions. In this case we are talking about materials:
- Goose down (intensively treated against allergens) – offers a medium level of comfort. Goose down pillows are rigid, as this material gives resistance, elasticity and volume. It is a natural material, which is why the price of sofas with goose down cushions is reasonable;
- wool: offers a high degree of comfort;
- the mix of goose down and wool: the lowest comfort level.
- Synthetic: layers of polyurethane of different densities.
3. Structure
Depending on the design, sofas can have a metal or wooden frame. The first variant is often found in linear sofas, with a high back, where the metal elements are visible. Wood, on the other hand, is very often used in the composition of modular sofas.
The sofa legs can also be made of wood or metal, depending on the model. Sofas with high legs are now very popular, which allow robot vacuum cleaners to carry out their work without obstacles and which, moreover, do not allow the accumulation of very large quantities of dust.
Italian sofa suppliers are among the most renowned in the world, with special sofa models, in whose design aesthetic and functional aspects are harmoniously intertwined.
Sofas with mini-library inserts, coffee tables or integrated sockets are the furniture of the future.
The structure also influences the size of the sofa. If the wooden structure can be used to create many modules, which can compose versatile sofas of various sizes, the metal structure allows the creation of linear sofas, up to 4-5 meters.
4. Design
Moving from functionality to aesthetics, we question one of the most important criteria according to which the sofa is chosen: design.
Current trends highlight minimalist, elegant and multifunctional sofa models, which, through accessories, go beyond the status of a simple sofa. Through creative vision and the courage to experiment, product designers create valuable furniture with exceptional aesthetics.
As a rule, they try to express the elegance of the sofa through flowing shapes, velvety coverings and delicate shades. Imposition materializes instead through strong, dark shades, the shine of natural leather and straight, rigid shapes.
All options discussed in this article are available from Delta Studio. Make an appointment in the showroom and talk to a consultant about the sofa you want. Tell him what aesthetic preferences you have and what your functional needs are. It will help you customize your sofa exactly as you dreamed.
